When you use your Banking Card for certain online purchases, the merchant may require additional identity verification through 3D Secure (3DS). This is an industry-standard security measure that helps confirm you are the one making the transaction.

How it works

  1. You enter your Banking Card details at checkout
  2. The merchant requests verification through 3D Secure
  3. Karat sends you a one-time code
  4. You enter the code on the merchant’s checkout page to complete the purchase
The entire process takes a few seconds and happens during checkout.

When you will see a 3D Secure prompt

Not every transaction requires 3D Secure. You are most likely to see a verification prompt when:
  • A merchant specifically requests additional authentication
  • You are making an online purchase with a new merchant
  • The transaction involves an international merchant
In-store and ATM transactions are not affected by 3D Secure.

What to do if you don’t receive a code

If you are prompted for a 3D Secure code but don’t receive one:
  • Check your email and text messages, including spam or junk folders
  • Make sure your contact information is up to date in your dashboard under Settings > Account Information
  • Wait a moment and try the transaction again

Why this matters

3D Secure adds a layer of protection to your online transactions by verifying your identity before the purchase is approved. This reduces the risk of unauthorized use of your card details for online purchases. Karat is a fintech company, not an FDIC-insured bank.
