Standard Card members earn 1 to 3x points in three categories of their choice. Most categories earn 3x points, while some earn 1 to 1.5x.

Choosing your categories

You can select three reward categories when you join the Karat Card. These categories determine where you earn elevated points on your spend. Below are the categories you can choose from.

Changing your categories

Rewards categories can be updated every six months. To make a change, visit your card rewards page in the dashboard. We do not support custom categories beyond those offered.

How merchant categories affect your rewards

Rewards are based on the merchant’s category code (MCC), assigned by the Visa network. Transactions are categorized by the merchant, not by individual items purchased, so a purchase may not qualify if the merchant is not coded within your selected category. Rewards also cannot be split across items within a single transaction. Merchant codes are assigned by Visa and outside of our control, so purchases may occasionally be categorized unexpectedly. For example, a computer purchased through Amazon may appear as a bookstore transaction. Karat is a financial technology company, not a bank.
